1887 PATENT IVES TOY CO. "POP" CAST IRON TOY CAP PISTOL, Best # P20

$ 52.8

Availability: 68 in stock
  • Vintage: Yes
  • Country/Region of Manufacture: United States
  • Brand: Ives Toy Co.
  • Condition: The example we are offering has a rich dark smooth & appealing patina from age. The hammer where the caps were popped has light surface rust. The flat spring which would have been inside the toy & which would assist the trigger to move properly to pop the caps is not present. The trigger is complete & intact. However, currently, because of the missing spring, it is possible to lift the trigger out of the pistol. It is easily possible to position the trigger forward or backward for display. But, because of the spring being missing, there is no tension on the trigger. Also, there is a tiny 3/8 inch long bit of iron missing from a thin extension that was originally present in the cast iron under the handle. This tiny chip would have taken place in period as the patina on the area matches the patina on the rest of the cap pistol.
  • Year: 1887
  • Material: Cast Iron

    Description

    In this listing we are offering an interesting & very scarce Ives Toy Company "POP" cast iron toy cap pistol. The cap pistol has the word "POP" on one side in the casting & the wording "PAT MAR 22 87" in the casting on the other side. This toy patented in 1887 & was made by the Ives Toy Co. in Bridgeport, Connecticut. An example of this cap pistol is listed as # P20 & illustrated on page 116 in the 1973 edition of the Charles Best "Cast Iron Toy Pistols" book.

    The length is listed in the Charles Best book as 3 1/2 inches long. But, according to our numerous measurements, we keep coming up with 3 5/8 inches long. So, we do not know if there was more than one size of this cap pistol produced by Ives or if Charles Best just slightly mis-measured the book example.
