The photos don't capture the rich colors of the box.
I believe that a paper image is applied to the box, and then the box
is painted with many applications of varnish.
The finish is covered with a nice craquelure
that I am certain was done purposely.
Note that there is a small separation of the bottom that
doesn't seem terribly loose at all... the box is deceptively well-made,
better than what you expect when you first see it... it's really
very nice. Bought in the mid-1950s in Japan.
There is a piece of tape on the bottom that I did not want to remove.
I imagine that the signature cartouche (on the back) is for the art maker
and not the box maker,
but I do not know for sure!

Weighs 2.33 oz. (6.60 grams)
The photos, while not perfect, are still very important parts
