Description
A beautiful Majolica plate by Imperial-Bonn's Ludwig Wessel in the Aesthetic Movement style with the "Astra" pattern. Features a green background with hand painted pink flowers and stems. It has a unique embossed rim and edge. Germany. Ca.1893.Pictured in Jeffrey Snyder's 'Marvelous Majolica' p.122
Very good condition, except for a series of tight radial hairlines to the plate's edge. They look like factory kiln stress lines. No chips or repairs. See photos.
Marked Imperial-Bonn "Astra" & "1". Measures 9 3/8" round x 1 1/8" high.
Classic Majolica is over 100 years old. It is typically low fired, soft earthenware that is so easily damaged through normal wear and tear. Majolica was meant to be used as a lower cost, day to day ware. Accordingly, it is hard to find 'perfect' pieces, most having scrapes, dings, chips. I try to point out the obvious issues on these pieces but some miss my attention. I set what I think are fair prices, always considering condition.
Please message me with any condition questions.
I refund excess postage in combined shipping cases.
