Description
A beautiful original antique pedestal cake plate (or compote) dating back to the 1880s. The art pottery compote was made by Griffen, Smith & Hill (also known as Etruscan Majolica) and bares the Maple Tree pattern by this company. This is a soft clay with a Tin Glaze. The base is designed to look like the trunk of the tree with brown bark and small green maple leaves scattered throughout. The top of the plate has several small brown branches with multiple green maple leaves. The branches sit against a pink background with a light yellow border around the outer edge.
The compote is finished with a smooth glaze. It has the hallmark underneath. Measures approximately 9 1/4" wide x 5 1/2" tall.
Griffen, Smith & Hill was founded in 1867 and was one of the
largest and most well known Majolica companies in America at the time. In 1890 the factory was almost destroyed by a fire. Wonderful condition with no
cracks or chips. Usual light age crazing but overall in VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT condition for its age .
